Q&A with Jihwi Ahn – Winner of the 2023 Footwear & Accessories Award, sponsored by Pentland Brands

Q: How did you first hear about Fashanne – Fashion Designers of the Future Awards?

A: I first learned about the Fashanne Awards through De Montfort University during my third year. My course tutors encouraged me to apply for the award.

 Q: Why did you decide to get involved with the Fashanne Awards?

A: The Fashanne Awards seemed like an exciting opportunity to showcase work from various universities. Additionally, the inclusion of categories for Footwear and Accessories aligned perfectly with my interests and allowed me to participate.

 Q: How did you find the Fashanne Awards process?

A: Overall, I found the process to be positive. It was clear, smooth, and well-supported. Although, preparing and submitting videos of my work was a bit challenging, as I wasn’t accustomed to filming, the experience ultimately provided me with some of my most memorable results.

 Q: How was the actual Fashanne Awards ceremony?

A: As a footwear design student, I had never experienced a runway show or showcased my work with a model before. Being part of the runway show was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed the venue, the backstage environment, the models, the students, the captivating works, and the amazing staff. It was an incredibly energetic and inspiring experience.

 Q: How did you feel when you won?

A: Winning felt surreal and incredibly gratifying. The diverse and unique styles of the other entries made it hard for me to expect being named the winner. It made the entire experience even more rewarding.

 Q: What was your internship at Pentland like and what was your role?

A: During my internship at Pentland, I was part of the Design Pool team, where interns in various roles contributed their creativity to the company. I had the chance to work on different brands like Kickers, Berghaus, and Speedo, where I suggested new shoe designs and contributed fresh ideas.

 Q: Can you share what a typical day working for Pentland looked like for you?

A: My time at Pentland was filled with exciting and memorable experiences. I participated in meetings, learned about new projects, and shared and developed ideas with colleagues. I also attended various events that allowed me to refine my ideas and connect with professionals from different areas, observing how they collaborated.

 Q: How do you think the Fashanne Awards helped your career?

A: The Fashanne Awards provided me with a valuable perspective on the industry, offering insight into backstage operations and presenting the creative work of other students. Winning the award was a significant achievement that motivated me further. The internship awarded as part of the prize was an incredible opportunity that greatly facilitated my entry into the industry as a recent graduate.

 Q: What advice/tips would you give to this year’s students entering the Fashanne Awards?

A: I encourage this year’s students to embrace and enjoy their work and take pride in it. Reflecting on my own experience, despite my initial uncertainties, I found that the effort and dedication I put into perfecting my work made me appreciate it even more in the end.

 Q: And finally, what’s next in store for you?

A: I am currently exploring new opportunities and seeking ways to contribute to the industry. I believe the experience and exposure I gained from the Fashanne Awards will empower me to take on new challenges and explore new avenues in the future.
